What is AIPIO?

The Australian Institute of Professional Intelligence Officers (AIPIO) is the peak representative body for intelligence practitioners in Australia.

Our mission is to advance the professionalisation of intelligence by sustaining a community of practitioners, promoting thought leadership, engaging in advocacy, and connecting intelligence domains across government, academia, business, regulatory bodies, and more.

Is AIPIO a government agency?

No. AIPIO is a not-for-profit professional institute, not a government agency.

We serve as an independent professional body and advocate for the intelligence profession broadly, rather than as a direct arm of government.

Do I need to be a resident of Australia to be a member?

No; you do not need to be an Australian resident. AIPIO offers membership for both Australian residents and people living overseas.

There is a one-off administration fee for new members (AUD 41.10 including GST) regardless of residency.

Can I attend events even if I’m not a member?

Yes, many AIPIO events are open to non-members for registration.

For example, the AIPIO National Conference is open for “anyone” to register.

Some of our Communities of Practice (CoPs) also allow participation by non-members at no cost.

Do you have face to face events?

Yes — AIPIO runs face-to-face events, workshops, conferences, and regional gatherings.

For example:

The AIPIO National Conference is held in person (e.g. Melbourne for 2026)
Specialist workshops (such as the Missing Persons Intelligence Innovation Workshop in Melbourne) have been held in person.
Regional events and local capital-city seminars are also part of the annual events calendar.
